That single word came out so sharply that I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

Emily stood in my bedroom doorway with one hand pressed against the frame and the other trembling at her side.

“Eleanor… I can explain who the real father is.”

For several seconds, I could not speak.

The lab report felt heavier in my hands than any piece of paper had a right to feel.

Downstairs, the marinara sauce was still simmering on the stove.

A lawn mower hummed somewhere three houses away.

A truck rolled past outside.

Ordinary sounds.

Ordinary Tuesday morning sounds.

Yet inside that bedroom, nothing in my life was ordinary anymore.

I slowly stood.

“Then explain.”

Emily glanced toward the hallway.

“Not here.”

“Here is exactly where you are going to explain it.”

“Jason could come home.”

“He deserves to hear it.”

Her face changed instantly.

“No.”

That single word came out so sharply that I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

I held up the report.

“You lied to my son about his children.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know what it looks like.”

“What it looks like?”

My voice cracked.

“It says zero percent, Emily.”

She looked down.

“Keep your voice down.”

I could hardly believe her.

For years, I had cooked for that woman.
