David Bennett — Managing Partner, Bennett Capital Group.

My father’s.

His name sat beneath the acquisition authorization in clean black letters.

David Bennett — Managing Partner, Bennett Capital Group.

For several seconds, I simply stared at it.

The captain must have noticed the change in my expression because he lowered his voice.

“Is everything all right, Ms. Bennett?”

I looked toward first class.

My father was watching me now.

Not casually.

Not the way he had watched Patricia hand me her luggage.

He was sitting completely still, staring at the tablet in my hands.

And I understood something immediately.

He recognized the document.

Maybe not the exact page.

But he recognized the transaction.

“Everything’s fine,” I said.

The captain nodded.

“We only need your acknowledgment that the conflict disclosure has been reviewed. Legal said they couldn’t finalize the closing packet without it.”

I read the page again.

Bennett Capital Group had served as one of the financial advisers to the airline’s previous ownership group.

My father’s firm had been involved on the other side of the acquisition.

That explained why his name appeared.

What it didn’t explain was why he had never once mentioned the transaction to me.

Then again, why would he?

As far as my father knew, his financially unsuccessful daughter worked in “some aviation consulting business.”
